How do I say a move?

Tap the microphone, then say the piece and the square:

• Pieces: “knight f3”, “bishop takes e5”, “knight b takes d2”
• Pawns: “e4”, “e takes d5”
• Castling: “castle” or “castle kingside”, “castle queenside”
• Promotion: “e8 promotes to queen”

VocalChess reads each move back to you. If it isn't sure what it heard, it asks you to confirm or to say the move again.

Which commands can I say?

• “Undo”, “take back” or “go back” takes back your last move.
• “Yes” or “no” answers when the app asks you to confirm a move. You can also tap the move instead.
• “Resign” ends the game.

The microphone doesn't work

If you declined access when the app first asked, open Settings → Apps → VocalChess and turn on Microphone and Speech Recognition. You can keep playing by tapping pieces on the board in the meantime.

Does it need an internet connection?

Only once. The first time you play, iOS may download Apple's speech model for your language. After that, VocalChess works fully offline.

What do I need?

An iPhone on iOS 26.5 or later.
